SomethingBetween
Someone
Welcome to Something Between, a place where my words connect you and I, shaping the invisible boundary between us. In the contemporary world we live, knowing how to identify objects, feelings, ourselves and others can be a minefield. We walk longingly in search of the definitive, rarely looking back at our own footprint in fear that all we leave behind is the imprint of a boot in the mud. No more. I have learned a new path to meaning that utilises space, borders and blurred lines to form a between state. In this particular space, I will depict life through my lens, allowing you to find your own definitions in the between I leave behind. But know this: the footprint is not the person.

You might be wondering who I am and what makes me qualified to put myself in this position. I would first point you in the direction of the title of this post. I am someone, no more able than you reading this right now. The only difference is that I have decided to make this observation on the betweenness of life (often finding myself within and without), and you have decided to read it. I hope that I will share some ideas you find insightful or entertaining, and that together we will learn and grow an understanding from them.

However, between the answer above and the question of who I am is a clearer answer. I am a writer who began as a young (and slow) poet. Any seasonal event or memorialising day would inspire the next World War II piece or stanzas of harvest celebration, although I never saw my writing as anything more than a hobby. As I grew up, I continued to pursue the art, expanding my passions into longer forms while remaining tame with my subject matter. That is until I started reading authors that school had never introduced, such as Kundera, Murakami, Kafka, Carver, Plath and O.Butler. Embraced by new styles, I followed their words to the University of East Anglia, where I studied English Literature and Creative Writing. There I developed my own style but also understood the importance of literary critique, with such feminist scholars as Ahmed, Ward, Woolf and J.Butler influencing my own expression and understanding of identity. I eventually went on to complete a Masters in Creative Writing, specialising in queer theory and its relationship with Jungian principles, which brings me all the way up to here.

Now that you know who I am (to some extent) and where I’ve been, the last thing to expand upon is what can be expected of this blog. My writing has always been driven by a desire to understand the unknown and the undefined, even in the simplest of senses, although it has since developed into a want to share knowledge and inspire change. Rarely does my writing achieve all of these things, and often it does something else entirely; however, the freedom for it to perform outside of labels, to push the boundaries of a system that functions through conformity, is what I'd like to explore. More specifically, I will be using this platform to share stories, poetry and work-in-progress pieces which will land somewhere between my expression and your impression. Thank you for joining me.
